I came back to Medellin after most of the week in Guatape. My main reasons for going back were to met up with various friends who were traveling, try and catch a friend that I hadn't seen in 17 years (from Cullowhee) and to see something other than just the Zona Rosa.
When I got to the hostal (Casa Kiwi), I found various friends there and as always made some new ones. I wasn't able to catch up with my old friend as he was sick that weekend and had had a wedding the weekend before. Sometimes things just don't work out. I did manage to get out of Poblado and the Zona Rosa and do something different. Poblado is a nice, very safe and pretty neighborhood though. There are several parks and streams running through it.
Most nights were about the same, hanging out with people on the deck at the hostal, maybe a few beers, maybe out to a bar/club and dancing. it was a slightly quieter weekend as there was MASSIVE amounts of rain. Saturday I went out to the Plaza Botero and Museo Antioquia. Fernando Botero is one the most famous artists to come out of South America.
His sculptors and paintings can be found all over the world but many are housed in Medellin, his home town. Plaza is right outside of the museum and contains many of his bronze sculptors. His works tend to show very robust figures and are distinctive. The Museum itself had many other works but a whole section devoted to him. It was a fun day and a good change of pace.
On Sunday I decided to take the night bus over to Bogota, but not before we had a group of about 15 from the hostal go pay paintball. I haven't played in years and it was immensely fun. Nothing like running around a bit of jungle in Medellin shooting at each other.
