"Totally sick bro' ", "Sweet as bro' " these were two of the most common phrases I heard this weekend. See we had a work organized surf camp trip. Yup, I tried to go surfing. Our office social club organized the trip. We used a very popular, fairly big tour group that caters to backpackers. If you don't know what this means... The camp was actually a camp, the staff slept in tents or had bunks in the boathouse. We had multishare cabanas, like most hostel type accomodation. There was a pool and an onsite bar, which is really good because we were in the middle of nowhere. It looked like someone had converted a farm into the camp and we were way in the back fields. There where real live wild kangaroos and wallabies in the paddocks around us.
But seriously it was ok. really about as I had expected. As long as there was running, hot water, a few drinks, hot meal and a place to lay your head, what more can you ask for.
Our groupd from work was about 20 or so colleagues and friends. The camp had somewhere near 80 or people there for the surf. We left Sydney at 7ish and got to the camp around 1030 (after a brief stop at the bottle shop - got to have a roadie and one stop for food). A little bit chillin' and hanging out, then it was time to go to sleep.
Early the next morning we headed out to our first destination. There were three buses of surfers, each went to a different beach. We went to Seal Rock Beach with our three guides. Our guides/drives were really cool and awesome surfers. They were from Sydney and one even sported the tats of a local surf gang. But none the less they were all real cool and laid back. What else would you expect from guys who give surf lessons for a living.
After slipping on the fabulous wetsuits (really not fun when they are already wet), we grabbed our giant foam boards and hit the beach. Apparently you have to learn on this foamies until you get the hang of it, partly because a fiberglass board is harder and harder to control. A few lessons in the sand and we in the water trying it out. According to our instructors, we had the best waves you could ask for, definately the best they had seen in awhile or better than the other groups got. Whatever, I thought they were good and it was fun. So after a very long day, I did manage to stand up a couple of times and not fall right over. Some of our group was really good some of us were passable. Then it was back to camp for a bit of a party.
Sunday morning came way too early. Still sore from the day and night before it was time to hit the beach again. We went up to Elizabeth Beach and settled in for some "decent" waves, or so I'm told. Sunday was a bit harder. Some board rash, sore muscles and well, suffering some from a big night made it a little more difficult. But eventually I stood up on the board some and had fun.
Surfing is definately cool, but not something I could do everyday. Sweet as bro'.
