Day 83 - 85 (June 5 - 7) - Iguaza Falls
So I had my first South American bus on the evening of the 4th from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu... First there are four main types of buses here - economy, semi cama, cama and cama executivo. Economy is like a normal bus, semi cama - the seats go back farther and they give you food, cama - the seats go back even further and they give you food and alcohol and blankets and executive... haven't ridden that yet but its supposed to be really good.
For the trip to Puerto Iguazu I booked a cama bus. It was about 18 hrs (6:54 pm and we got in about 12:45 the next day) but at least I spent a lot of it asleep. I did get a little glass of whiskey before dinner, wine with dinner and champagne afterwards!?! I also did have to watch a few movies - Dear John and then the torturous Jennifer Lopez movie - The Backup Plan... thankfully I soon fell asleep...
On the way to Iguazu I ended up as the last person on the bus and was actually asked to get off - in the midle of nowhere - and wait for antoher bus... I agreed only once they said that they would actually wait for the other bus and not just leave me behind! I did eventually get to town, walked to my hostel and checked in. Puerto Iguazu is really small, if you walk about 20 minutes in any direction, you've reached the end of town. I did walk down to the river. You can stand in one place and see the coasts of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. as I strolled downhill, I managed to walk right into the Argentina F1 powerboat race or exhibition. I didn't stay too long (18 hr bus = tired) but watched some of the boats do a small circuit. They were pretty cool.
I met a few people at the hostel and had a quiet, early night. The next morning I went to the national park. Iguazu falls are impressive, well thats a bit of an understatement. They are huge and crazy. we went on three different walks. The last of which was to the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's throat). This was where several parts of the waterfall actually all crash in on themselves in a semicircle. It made Victoria Falls look a bit sad really... The other two tracks were on the top and bottom of the adjacent side of the falls. They said there were over 250 individual waterfalls on the side and I could believe it! There is an island in the middle but since the water was high, we couldn't go out there. I walked around the park with some people from the hostel and two guys I had met in BA and met in Iguazu... everyone kind of runs the same places...
Then it was time to get my 18 hr bus back to Buenos Aires... some mediocre food, bad 90s action movies (Jean Claude Van Damme style) and rough sleep later, I was back in BA around noon. After that I didn't do much. Just trying to plan the next few days and get an idea of where I am headed and what I am going to do!
