Day 45 - 51 Nairobi

Day 45 51 Nairobi
So I went out into Nairobi with Aitan. We went to an Indian place for dinner and I definitely felt a little out of place given I was just off the overlander truck and definitely needed a shower and clean clothes. It was a good meal and we made it back to Aitan’s house a little bit later. Aitan had just moved into a new house in a very nice area of town. However that meant that there was a lot of work going on, security gates being installed, palisade fencing being put up and things being delivered. Thankfully he did have a bed in the guest room and enough things around to be livable and I wasn’t imposing.

We spent most of the next few days relaxing and just hanging out. We went out once or twice for dinner and drinks with some expat friends of his and saw a bit of the night life. The clubs we went to were… interesting. Lets just say that they were places were expats went, so those locals who cater to some expats were out in abundance… Ok to put it plainly, there were more hookers, prostitutes, street walkers, ladies (using the term loosely) of the night, working girls or whatever you want to cal them than normal people or at least it seemed that way. They came in all shapes, sizes and gender (sometimes not sure what any of the above actually were. We even saw a turf fight (just lasted like 2 seconds) between some of them. It was all a bit amusing yet sad. Whatever, same thing different city.

Nairobi is a bit crazy, loads of traffic that makes other cities I have been to (Cairo, Panama City, London, New York) look like a piece of cake. There is a specific skill or craziness or both required to drive in a place like that.

One thing that is a constant concern in Nairobi (and most places actually) is security. Therefore most houses that I saw had fences and gates and most apartments had high fences and guards. These are just the simple measures, many places have armed guards, CCTV and other measures in place to deter and thwart any criminal intent.Regardless Nairobi was a fun place albeit crazy. Maybe one day I’ll go back and actually explore but it was nice having some time to chill out after 41 days on the truck and before I set out on my own for 5 months.
