Day 28 - 31 - Malawi (Kande Beach and Chitimba)

Day 28 - 30 (Acacia day 25-27) – Kande Beach
We woke up to another long drive to get across the Malawian border and then to drive to Kande beach. We have had several long days in a row to cover a significant amount of ground. We finally got to Kande and were spending a few days there.

Kande is right on Lake Malawi but is not in a city or town, it is sort of a hidden Shangri-La of water sports fun. Lake Malawi is the third largest freshwater lake in Africa, measuring 600 by 85 km at its longest/widest points. The water is nice and cool and is very clear. However it does have waves and in all honestly looks like the ocean. The Beach has a dive center and is supposed to be great for diving and snorkeling, but the dive instructor was on vacation during the time we were there….
Unfortunately our first full day in Kande was fairly full of rain. So we entertained ourselves as best we could – sleep, relaxing in hammocks and watching a movie on my laptop. The weather got better and cooperated giving us a beautiful next day. So we got plenty of sun. The girls on the trip went horseback riding early in the morning, including swimming the in lake with the horses. Then they went down to an orphange and visited with the kids... Some of the guides and I took canoes out on the lake and paddled a few kilometers to and around Kande Island. By the time we got back to shore I was so tired from paddling and fighting the currents I made a pathetic attempt to drag my canoe back to the office… I took a nap in a hammock.

At one point during the day, clouds of lake flies drifted onto shore. When they were on the horizon, the clouds looked like there was a fire in the distance. The flies are absolutely tiny and harmless. However there are billions of them! The locals will actually wet the bottom of a woven basket and swing the basket in the air to catch the flies. They can then make hamburger style patties and fry them. Its supposed to taste good but I’ll pass.

I did get to check email at Kande and saw the headlines about the Icelandic ash cloud. We’ll see how this affects things but hopefully it will have no effect on me. There are several friends that I have made along the way that have found that their flights are already delayed and having other travel issues.

Day 31 (Acacia day 28) – Chitimba
Today was a fairly long drive as we drove north towards the border with Tanzania. We took in some breathe taking views as we drove through the mountains and caught occasional glimpses of the northern portions of Lake Malawi. Our campsite was right on the edge of the Lake. We had great views of the sunset and lake.

There was a market right outside the gates, they were more than happy to try and accommodate you, especially on their terms. They would even take clothes, books or just about anything in trade. After a prolonged search and negotiations (not that I was actually looking for souvenirs but I had time to kill) I settled on a small carved wooden bowl with the Big 5 (elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and lion) ringing the outside. A nice dinner and a few laughs and we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of a massive rain storm… again… oh well.
