Well, where to start with this post. A lot has happened and not happened. On July 25th, I left England to go to NC to await my UK visa. I am starting to think that I should avoid international air travel, there always seems to be something that happens to me. So I flew from London to NY with little issue. My problems, or inconveniences really started when I got into NY.
See I arrived at JFK at midnight or so (my flight was delayed a bit and then we waited on the tarmak for a terminal for over an hour). My connection to RDU was out of La Guardia at about 6 am. So no big deal I thought, just a few hours to kill. So I got my gear and found a hire car over to La Guardia... only to realize 1) I had no US cash and 2) he didn't want me to use a credit card so that he didn't have to call it in. What I did do was end up paying for the parking on my card and then paying him with all of the GBPs I had left. Even with that I was a good bit short on the fare, but he took me anyway. He was from Trinidad (surprise) and we talked about the West Indies cricket tour most of the way. See some of my inane trivia finally is useful.
Once I got to La Guardia, I noticed people sleeping everywhere. The place looked like an emergency shelter for a hurricane. So what had happened was that so many flights were cancelled and there are no nearby hotels, that everyone just stayed in the airport. Some workers distributed blankets and stuff to people. The funniest thing was a small family who had a 3 or 4 year old. They were huddled in a corner like so many others, Except that they had opened one of their suitcases and the little one was using it as a bed. Sad as it sounds it was really funny.
Well just as the check in counter was opening, I noticed my 6 am flight had already been cancelled. AWESOME. Plus the check-in line was already about an hour long, I think some people went ahead and slept in line... hmmm planning.... I finally was put standby on
the 8am flight and made it to NC. I'm just happy my flight didn't end
up like this....
So it was back in NC for me. Since July 25 I have been traveling around NC and VA visiting friends and family. My travels go a bit like this: RDU - Rowland - Fayetteville - Morrisville - Charlotte - Fayetteville - Rowland - Virginia Beach - Richmond - Chapel Hill - Greensboro - Charlotte and about 1400 miles driven so far. Also I managed to return to the Farm in Rowland just in time to turn 29 and get sick with a 103 degree fever, which kept me in bed for 2 or days. Well 29 is shaping up to be a great year.... But plenty of good things have happened and I have managed to see lots of family and friends. And until the UK immigration people decide that I am cleared, I'll be bumming around somewhere near you. Homeless, semi-unemployed and just wandering - again.
