Big Weekend

Yea, it was a big enough weekend that it has taken until Wednesday to write it.

Friday night I got to go on a Sydney Harbour cruise. It was sponsored by the Sydney Firebrigade as a fundraiser or maybe just an excuse for a good time. It was really awesome. We departed from right below the Harbour Bridge and motored around for about 4 hrs. Seeing Sydney from the water was really cool. The boat was packed with about 400 people, loads of beer and food and a dance floor. Ok so it was a party cruise, whatever. It was fun and maybe some of the best views of downtown Sydney I've seen yet.

Saturday morning I got a couch delivered to the apartment. That means we finally have something to sit on. Previously the living room only had a huge plasma screen tv/surround sound and bar fridge, notice there was no real furniture... but we had the important stuff covered. Also a friend from our Adelaide office was coming into town. We ended up walking the Eastern Beach Coast Walk (Coogee to Bondi) for some sightseeing. Its a nice walk, you go by several beaches (Clovelly, Bronte, Tamarama) and some nice sights.

The more important aspect of Saturday was that it was the finals for the Rugby World Cup (South Africa vs England). Unfortunately to see it live, meant watching it at 5 am. However before that were several soccer games that my friend was interested in. So after 10 hours in the sports bar (9pm - 7am), I managed to watch at 3 full soccer games, the Cup finals, a little cricket and the sun come up. Trust me, it was a big night.

So you would think after that night Sunday would be a waste... Nope, after a scant 4 hours sleep it was back to the beach. Its hard to waste a beautiful, sunny day asleep when there is a perfectly good beach just around the corner.

On a different note, I realized that I have now surpassed the longest time I have been out of the country. Yup and several months before I go back. I did book a big vacation here for the holidays. I am going up to Cairns (way up north) for 6 or 7 days. I'll be doing a little whitewater rafting, sea kayaking the Reef, and exploring some rain forests over Christmas. Then I'm going down to Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands for New Years. After New Years on the beach, I'm sailing around the islands for a few days and heading back to Sydney. Should be awesome.

Points to Ponder:
Hotels are actually bars but they do have some rooms (usually). But not all bars are hotels.

I'm terribly sorry that I missed your call Friday night. The number showed as "Unavailable" so of course I screened it :(

Sounds like you are having a great time in Sydney. Talk to you soon,
Dillan

David,
I really enjoy reading your reports -- even though I don't always comment. You are quite a writer, David!
Keep it going,
Uncle Richard :-)
