A couple of us decided to go over the hill (literally a 8k cab ride) to go visit Taganga for the weekend. Taganga is a small fishing village and very popular with backpackers. Its a nice little place to watch the sunset over the water. The village is surrounded by hills that end abruptly in the sea and while we got a lot of sun, sometimes the clouds are so heavy with rain they look like they tumble down the hilltops.
There are several dive shops and companies doing tours in the area. It has a slightly nicer beach on its waterfront but you can hike over the mountain (20 minutes or so) or take a launcha (6k return) to go to a decent beach, Playa Grande.
We checked into a hostel, dropped our bags and caught a launcha over to the
beach. The beach was nice but not that great. Not quite sandy like NC but not rocky like the UK. The entire area had tons of little places to eat, rent chairs and whatever. Thats basically what we did for the next couple of days. Got some sun, hung out, nothing crazy. There are two clubs in Taganga too, that stay open until 3 or 4 am so you can go out. I am going to bounce back and forth between Santa Marta and Taganga for a bit. There is never enough time to relax and go to the beach.
