Day 19 - 20 Kasane / Chobe River

Day 19 (Acacia day 16) – Kasane
Another fairly long day was delayed when the campsite had misplaced some of our laundry. They had apparently made a mess of most our laundry by washing them and since the rain was coming… put all of the clothes in a pot and inside, until tomorrow when they tried to hang them out to dry. Nothing like getting clothes back that you think are clean but smell like 3 week old bread. Anyway it was off to Kasane and the Chobe river now.

It as a big drive that came to a sudden halt, there were elephants on road. Seriously. It was really cool there were several on either side of the road and some crossing it. Definitely not something you want to hit driving 60 mph!!

We finally got to our campsite - Thebe river camp. However since the camp is right on the banks of the Chobe, half of it was flooded. There were several other trucks in and out of the camp. We just did the usual, set camp and cooked. Tomorrow we were going on an early morning game drive in the park and then an afternoon river game / booze cruise.

Day 20 (Acacia day 17) – Kasane
Up and out early… UGH. We got picked up by a local operator to go the Chobe National Park for a game drive. The park was only a few kilometers away but in an open game truck, it feels like ages. We drove for about 2 or so hours and saw more giraffes, hundreds of impala, a few kudu, some buffalo (another of the Big 5), hippos, baboons (seemingly by the hundred), waterbuck (type of antelope), crocodiles, monitor lizards, a mongoose family, tons of different birds and one elephant. It was a really nice park and cool. Then it was back to camp for a nap and lunch. Some of our group walked into town to get supplies, I just chillaxed and took a nap.

Then it was off to the game/booze cruise. We loaded a cooler with a few drinks… and took off to the jetty. The boat was a big flat bottomed barge type that you see used for river cruises of this sort. There were several other trucks of people on it too. It quickly turned into a party on the water. As we got closer to the Park we had to be quiet… not likely with the groups we had plus the social lubrication being applied but we more or less managed. As we got into the Park we saw a herd of elephants right by the water, more hippos, some crocs and kudu and impala. It was really fun and a great way to see the park and area.

To get back from the jetty we had actually caught a ride on another Acacia truck and on the way back ours picked the two crews up. One of them would actually be joining in our truck in Livingstone. You can imagine that after a few hours on the water with a few drinks, everyone was in a party mood. The truck turned into an impromptu dance floor as we drove the few kilometers back to camp and then was our private club in the site. We had it bouncing and jumping so much, our driver half heartedly blamed us for a broken rear spring sprocket (or something like that). However we knew it was just his penchant for trying to hit every pothole in the roads.
